Treatment of Raynaud's disease in the Sanatorium "Berezovy Gai"

Raynaud’s disease develops as a result of damage to the brain's segmental apparatus and peripheral parts of the autonomic nervous system. It is also known as vasomotor-trophic neurosis or vascular-trophic neuropathy. The condition involves spasmodic disturbances in arterial blood flow to the hands and feet, leading to color changes in the skin from pale to bluish, especially under cold exposure or emotional stress.

A characteristic feature of Raynaud’s disease is its symmetrical and bilateral nature, meaning both limbs are affected equally. The term “Raynaud’s disease” is used when no specific underlying cause is identified. If the symptoms are associated with other conditions — such as scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, thyroid dysfunction, or neurological disorders — it is referred to as Raynaud’s syndrome.

Common causes of the disease include:

  • Genetic predisposition;
  • Frequent injuries;
  • Stressful conditions;
  • Occupational factors.

Symptoms and Stages of the Disease

The progression of Raynaud’s disease includes three main stages:

  1. Stage I – short-term artery spasm, accompanied by numbness and paleness of the skin on fingers (2–5) and toes (1–3 phalanges). After the attack, skin regains its natural color and limbs warm up again.
  2. Stage II – blue-purple discoloration of the extremities. Pain or tingling may occur. Sensitivity is reduced at the site of ischemia, and swelling may appear.
  3. Stage III – prolonged ischemia leads to the formation of blood-filled blisters on the limbs. This stage can result in necrosis of soft tissues or even bone tissue.

Diagnosis of Raynaud’s Disease

To detect and monitor this condition, clinical tests must distinguish between vascular spasm and structural narrowing of blood vessels. For this purpose, the following diagnostic methods are used:

  • Angiography;
  • Ultrasound angiography.

Treatment of Raynaud’s Disease at the Sanatorium

Patients diagnosed with Raynaud’s should keep their arms and legs warm and avoid exposure to cold. Taking warm baths, undergoing relaxation therapy, quitting harmful habits — especially smoking — and avoiding work involving fine finger movements, vibrating tools, chemicals, or damp environments is highly recommended.

In more complex cases, both conservative and surgical treatment methods may be prescribed. The “Berezoviy Gai” sanatorium offers recovery programs for patients suffering from Raynaud’s disease and syndrome. Our facility provides the following treatment options:

  • Gas injections (CO₂ therapy);
  • Thermogly mud therapy;
  • Electrophoresis;
  • Amplipulse therapy;
  • Dry carbonic acid baths;
  • Laser-magnetic therapy and others.
