Magnetic therapy
Those familiar with physiotherapeutic procedures have likely heard of **magnetotherapy**. Let’s take a closer look at what this procedure involves, its unique features, and in which cases it is recommended to undergo a course of treatment.
We all occasionally hear or talk about magnetic storms, blaming them for headaches. We are also aware of harmful electromagnetic radiation from certain household appliances. Magnetic fields indeed affect the human body — but not always negatively. A clear example of this beneficial effect is **magnetotherapy**, a physiotherapeutic procedure that uses alternating low-frequency magnetic fields applied either to the whole body or specific areas.
Low-frequency magnetic fields influence the body by transferring magnetic properties to some tissues — although they themselves are not magnetized. This procedure is effective both as a form of treatment and prevention, because disruptions in our internal magnetic balance can lead to various diseases. Thanks to such "recharging" through magnetotherapy, the body gradually restores itself, and overall well-being improves.
Features of Magnetotherapy
Magnetotherapy is considered one of the mildest and most gentle procedures, easily tolerated and completely painless. Unlike other therapies, magnetic fields can penetrate even through plaster casts, ointments, or other physical barriers that might otherwise block treatment effects.
The entire body responds to magnetic fields, but especially the endocrine, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. Undergoing a course of magnetotherapy increases the body's resistance to diseases caused by dysfunction in these systems. Magnetic fields improve the function of the thyroid gland, reproductive organs, and adrenal glands.
How a Magnetotherapy Session Proceeds
As with any therapeutic procedure, the duration and intensity of magnetotherapy depend on the type and severity of the condition. The dosage is individually selected by a specialist and usually ranges between 0.5 and 50 millitesla (weak magnetic fields). The length of each session typically lasts from 10 to 30 minutes, and a full course usually consists of 6–12 sessions. It is recommended to undergo sessions daily or every other day.
During the procedure, it is important to follow safety measures: remove all metal objects, including jewelry, keys, mobile phones, credit cards with magnetic strips, etc. The therapy is performed using portable or stationary devices equipped with special inductors. A portable device contains two working surfaces with built-in induction coils. These are placed on the affected area of the body as close as possible to the site of discomfort. A stationary device creates a magnetic field around the patient, constantly changing direction — known as **rotating magnetic field therapy**. In this case, the patient lies inside the machine during the session.
Indications and Contraindications for Magnetotherapy
Magnetotherapy has found wide application in medicine. A course of magnetotherapy is recommended for:
- Urogenital diseases: cystitis, prostatitis, infertility, benign tumors;
- Gastrointestinal tract disorders;
- Skin conditions;
- Cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, vegetative-vascular dystonia);
- Spinal injuries;
- Osteoarthritis, arthritis, and more.
The result of undergoing magnetotherapy includes improved general well-being, reduced or eliminated pain, normalized blood pressure, better sleep, reduced irritability, and enhanced immune response. It also increases the blood's ability to absorb oxygen — all of which has been scientifically proven over time. However, magnetotherapy does have its contraindications.
As mentioned earlier, magnetic fields tend to lower blood pressure — so this procedure is not recommended for patients with hypotension. It is strictly prohibited for patients with pacemakers. Other contraindications include:
- Active tuberculosis;
- Progressive benign tumors;
- Oncological diseases;
- Elevated body temperature;
- In some cases — pregnancy.
