Diadinamotherapy
Diadynamic therapy is one of many physiotherapeutic methods based on treatment with electric current (like electrophoresis, Darsonval therapy, and others). It is an **impulse therapy**, using low-frequency currents ranging from 50 to 100 Hz for therapeutic purposes.
This method was developed about 70 years ago by the French scientist **Pierre Bernard** and quickly adopted into medical practice. Bernard modeled constant electric currents at frequencies of 50 and 100 pulses per second, scientifically substantiating their use in medicine. This type of current later became known as **Bernard's current**, or **diadynamic current**.
The method gained popularity in physiotherapy due to its rapid pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and decongestant effects.
How Diadynamic Therapy Works
How does diadynamic current work? It is a **low-frequency direct current** delivered in impulses of varying duration to the patient’s body. The current stimulates skin receptors and neuromuscular structures, thereby improving blood circulation and tissue nutrition, and normalizing metabolic processes.
The procedure follows principles common to most similar electrotherapy techniques. There should be no wounds or abrasions on the area being treated. If present, damaged areas must be covered with protective ointment and isolated beforehand. A specialist selects the appropriate electrode placement zones and applies them over special damp pads.
During the session, you may feel mild tingling or warmth — this is completely normal and shouldn’t cause concern. If discomfort occurs, ask your doctor to reduce the current intensity. Each session lasts between 10–15 minutes — up to 5 minutes per area. Typically, a course includes 5–6 sessions, though exact number will be determined by your physician.
Diadynamic therapy should be performed only in specialized clinics under professional supervision. While it's possible to purchase a device and perform the therapy at home, we strongly recommend undergoing the treatment with qualified specialists to ensure safety and maximum effectiveness.
For enhanced results, diadynamic therapy is best combined with other treatments such as heat therapy, paraffin applications, peloid therapy, and massage.
Indications for Diadynamic Therapy
Electrotherapy covers a wide range of physiotherapeutic applications, with each method being most effective for certain conditions. High efficiency can also be achieved through combination treatments. For example, diadynamic therapy works well alongside electrophoresis. Indications for diadynamic therapy include:
- Musculoskeletal disorders (osteochondrosis, arthritis, arthrosis, etc.);
- Various injuries: bruises, fractures, dislocations, etc.;
- Gastrointestinal tract diseases;
- Bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis;
- ENT diseases;
- Peripheral nervous system disorders (radiculitis, neuralgia);
- Metabolic disturbances;
- Gynecological conditions.
Contraindications for Diadynamic Therapy
There are situations where diadynamic therapy or electrophoresis could harm your health if applied:
- Predisposition to bleeding;
- Acute inflammatory processes;
- Epilepsy;
- Individual intolerance or allergy to the medicinal substance used;
- Pulmonary or kidney tuberculosis.
