Darsonvalization
The Discovery of the D'Arsonval
In 1891, Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval, a French physiologist, made an observation that, more than 100 years later, allows us to correct cosmetic imperfections and treat various diseases. D'Arsonval noticed that high-frequency current could deeply penetrate tissues, causing certain changes without irritating effects.
This observation became the basis for the creation of a device named after the French scientist. As often happens, the surname quickly became a common noun, so today the "d'Arsonval apparatus" is also simply known as **Darsonval**.
Darsonvalization: Procedure Description
Many well-known procedures used in cosmetology and medicine are based on the action of electric current — such as electrophoresis and galvanization. Darsonvalization is one of these methods. It involves applying short pulses of high-frequency alternating current to the skin, allowing it to penetrate into deeper tissues. As a result, blood circulation and skin nutrition improve, swelling decreases, damaged tissues regenerate, and salt deposits in joints dissolve, among other benefits.
How does this procedure work? Let’s look at the differences between types of darsonvalization. The procedure can be either contact (spark-free) or distance (spark-based). In the first case, the electrode is applied directly to the patient's skin, and the therapist gently moves it across the surface without lifting. In the second method, the electrode is held 0.5–2 cm away from the skin, creating a discharge that emits ozone, which helps heal wounds by cauterizing them.
For darsonvalization, special glass electrodes are used. They come in various shapes and sizes, and the choice depends on the area being treated and the patient's condition:
- Comb-shaped electrodes — for the scalp;
- Mushroom-shaped electrodes — for treating large areas of skin;
- T-shaped electrodes — for the spine;
- Cavity electrodes (rectal and vaginal) — and others.
The duration of each session is determined by the physician. The minimum recommended course includes 5 sessions. On average, a full course consists of 5–15 sessions lasting 5–10 minutes (up to 20 minutes).
Indications and Contraindications for Darsonvalization
The method of darsonvalization has found widespread use in cosmetology and medicine due to its effective impact on the human body. The treatment provides not only a cosmetic effect but also health benefits — which is much more important. Darsonval treats the cause, not just the symptoms. Therefore, a course of darsonvalization is recommended if you have:
- Wounds, ulcers, keloid scars;
- ENT diseases (rhinitis, sinusitis, etc.);
- Varicose vein expansion;
- Hair growth problems, alopecia;
- Cellulite;
- Gastrointestinal disorders (gastritis, colitis, etc.);
- Joint diseases (arthritis and arthrosis);
- Cardiovascular diseases (angina and hypertension in early stages);
- Nervous system disorders (headaches, post-stroke conditions, etc.);
- Sleep problems.
Darsonval effectively addresses these and many other issues — both in combination with other treatments or medications (medical treatment). This procedure is also widely used in cosmetology: darsonvalization can smooth out early expression lines, combat signs of aging, and eliminate acne.
Despite its wide range of applications, darsonvalization still has contraindications. These include:
- Acute cardiovascular insufficiency;
- Presence of benign or malignant tumors;
- Pacemaker: electric discharges may interfere with its operation;
- Pregnancy;
- Tuberculosis;
- Feverish conditions;
- Epilepsy and others.
You can purchase a Darsonval device and perform the procedure at home; however, we recommend consulting a doctor who will either prescribe or rule out this treatment. To achieve the best results, it is advisable to undergo the procedure in specialized clinics under professional supervision.
