Ultratonotherapy

Ultratonotherapy

Ultratone therapy is one of many electrotherapy methods used in physiotherapy, along with Amplipulse therapy, Darsonval therapy, and others. Each has its own unique features, targets specific effects, and treats certain conditions.

The method of ultratone therapy involves applying low-frequency electrical current of high voltage but low power to the human body. During this procedure, electrodes are placed on specific areas of the patient’s body — precisely over the affected zones — and act directly on them. The electrodes are made from glass tubes filled with inert gas and contain metal plates inside. While acting on the affected tissues, the device also emits ozone as a byproduct of the electric discharge.

Therapeutic Effects of Ultratone Therapy

The principle of action lies in the body's reaction to the received electrical impulse. The response to the current during ultratone therapy includes:

  • Narrowing (constriction) of capillaries;
  • Improved circulation at the treatment site;
  • Enhanced metabolic activity;
  • Increased venous tone.

This procedure helps reduce pain by restoring nerve conductivity and reducing tissue stagnation. Increased body temperature and improved microcirculation enhance tissue regeneration, reduce inflammation, and relieve swelling.

Ultratone therapy is most similar to Darsonval therapy, but compared to it, offers stronger analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, improves blood vessel function, and causes no irritation. Therefore, it is suitable for both elderly patients and children.

Best results are achieved when ultratone therapy is combined with other physiotherapeutic techniques such as ultrasound, electrophoresis, or magnetotherapy.

Thus, the main therapeutic effects of ultratone therapy include:

  • Vasodilating (improves blood flow);
  • Spasmolytic;
  • Pain-relieving;
  • Anti-inflammatory.

How an Ultratone Therapy Session Proceeds

Before the session, all metal objects must be removed. The area to be treated should be clean and dry.

The output power of the device ranges from 3–10 W, and the required intensity is set by the physician based on individual needs. One session lasts approximately 5–15 minutes, and a full course typically consists of 8–16 sessions (up to 20). It is recommended to undergo sessions daily or every other day.

Indications and Contraindications for Ultratone Therapy

A course of ultratone therapy is indicated in the following cases:

  • Inflammatory skin conditions;
  • Postoperative scars;
  • Adhesion processes;
  • Gynecological disorders;
  • Allergic and acne-like eruptions;
  • Consequences of head trauma;
  • Prostatitis and others.

Contraindications are generally the same as for most electrotherapy methods:

  • Oncological diseases;
  • Active tuberculosis;
  • Individual intolerance to the procedure;
  • Benign tumors;
  • Blood disorders.
