Ultrasound therapy

Ultrasound therapy

For those unfamiliar with physiotherapeutic treatment methods, ultrasound is most often associated with diagnostic imaging. That’s true — ultrasound diagnostics (UZD helps identify internal organ and vascular issues without invasive procedures. However, ultrasound is also widely used in many other areas of medicine: surgery, therapy, and especially physiotherapy.

In physiotherapy, ultrasound is used to treat various diseases through exposure to high-frequency sound waves (20–3000 Hz). Like electrophoresis, therapeutic ultrasound increases the skin's permeability, allowing better absorption of topical medications through sweat and sebaceous glands and ducts.

Therapeutic Effects of Ultrasound on the Human Body

Ultrasound has a mechanical, physicochemical, and thermal effect on tissues:

  • Tissue micro-massage;
  • Activation of metabolic processes and normalization of pH levels;
  • Breakdown of cellulite deposits;
  • Tissue warming by 1 degree due to conversion of mechanical energy into heat.

Ultrasound therapy offers a range of positive effects on the body:

  • Pain relief;
  • Spasm reduction;
  • Bactericidal effect;
  • Improved metabolism;
  • Reduction of swelling, bruises, and scars;
  • Boosted immune response;
  • Accelerated tissue regeneration.

Procedure Details

To ensure proper contact between the ultrasound device and the patient's skin, the treatment area must be coated with a special contact substance such as lanolin or vaseline, or a medicated cream (e.g., heparin ointment), or water as an air-free medium. It is important to eliminate any air between the skin and the ultrasound head for optimal results.

A single session of ultrasound therapy lasts no more than 12–15 minutes. A full course usually consists of 6–12 sessions conducted daily or every other day. The exact number of procedures is determined by your treating physician or physiotherapist.

The procedure is completely painless. However, during the course, some patients may experience dizziness, weakness, or temporary worsening of symptoms. In such cases, it is recommended to skip 1–2 sessions and then continue the treatment at a lower intensity.

Indications and Contraindications for Ultrasound Therapy (UT)

Like all physiotherapeutic procedures, ultrasound has specific indications and contraindications. We strongly advise against self-diagnosis — always consult a doctor before undergoing treatment. Ultrasound therapy is recommended for:

  • Skin conditions;
  • ENT disorders;
  • Gynecological and urological conditions (adnexitis, prostatitis, mastitis, etc.);
  • Digestive system diseases (gastritis, ulcers, pancreatitis, etc.);
  • Keloid scars;
  • Adhesions;
  • Spinal deformities;
  • Obesity;
  • Bowel dysfunction;
  • Heel spurs;
  • Painful injuries;
  • Renal, cardiac, and vascular insufficiency, and others.

Ultrasound is also widely used in cosmetology, for example, in ultrasonic facial peeling or phonophoresis (using ultrasound to enhance drug delivery).

For enhanced effectiveness, ultrasound therapy should be combined with magnetotherapy or vacuum therapy, preferably performed before the ultrasound session.

Contraindications for Ultrasound Therapy include:

  • Inflammatory processes (except chronic ones);
  • Vegatovascular dystonia;
  • Diabetes;
  • Jaundice;
  • Poor blood clotting;
  • Heart rhythm disorders; and others.

General contraindication: Avoid applying ultrasound directly over the heart or brain.
