Treatment of diabetes mellitus in the sanatorium "Berezovy Gai"

The disease that affects more and more people every year has raised many questions among medical professionals. Its origins date back to the works of Greek physicians from the 2nd century BC. Over this long period, scientific research on diabetes has developed several paradigms — with the latest (insulin deficiency) emerging from discoveries made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But what exactly is diabetes today?

Diabetes and Its Causes

Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder caused by either absolute or relative deficiency of insulin — a hormone produced by the pancreas. Prolonged elevated levels of glucose in the blood lead to hyperglycemia. This condition disrupts all metabolic processes in the human body.

Diabetes can be hereditary or acquired. Complications include:

  • Atherosclerosis;
  • Hypertension;
  • Kidney failure;
  • Worsening vision;
  • Skin diseases;
  • Stroke;
  • Myocardial infarction;
  • Diabetic coma, and others.

Main causes of diabetes:

  • Destruction of beta-cells responsible for insulin production, often due to conditions like pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, hyperthyroidism, and other diseases;
  • Tissue resistance to insulin;
  • Viral infections such as rubella, mumps, epidemic hepatitis, and others that may trigger the disease;
  • Nervous stress, especially in those with genetic predisposition;
  • Age;
  • Obesity.

It's important to distinguish diabetes as a chronic disease from temporary hyperglycemic states caused by certain medications. Not all patients with high blood sugar require insulin therapy.

Types of Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes:

  • Type I diabetes (pancreatic insufficiency, insulin-dependent) — results from damage to the endocrine cells of the pancreas, leading to reduced insulin production. It most commonly develops as a complication after viral infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. Patients with Type I diabetes require strict dietary control and regular insulin injections before meals.
  • Type II diabetes (non-insulin dependent) — occurs when sufficient insulin is still produced, but the body’s cells become resistant to it. This type usually affects overweight individuals over the age of 40.

Symptoms of the Disease

Clinical symptoms of diabetes develop gradually. Early signs include:

  • Dry mouth and persistent thirst;
  • Increased urine output;
  • Weight gain;
  • Severe itching and dry skin;
  • Excessive sweating;
  • Poor wound healing.

If these symptoms appear, it is advisable to have a blood test for glucose levels.

Diagnosis of Diabetes

Monitoring and early detection of diabetes involve laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures sucha s:

  • Fasting blood glucose test;
  • Glucose tolerance test;
  • Glucose profile monitoring;
  • Urine analysis for glucose, protein, and albumin;
  • Urine ketone testing (for acetone);
  • Blood test for endogenous insulin levels, and more.

Diabetes Treatment at the Berezoviy Gai Sanatorium

Treatment of diabetes aims to reduce blood glucose levels and restore normal metabolic function. Depending on the type of diabetes, different treatment methods are used. Effective approaches include diet therapy, insulin therapy (for Type I), moderate physical activity, and hypoglycemic medications (for Type II). Regular prevention of complications is essential throughout the course of the disease.

The “Berezoviy Gai” sanatorium offers a comprehensive set of therapeutic procedures aimed at managing diabetes. These include:

  • CO₂ gas injections;
  • Cryotherapy;
  • Radon baths;
  • Diadynamic therapy;
  • Dry carbonic acid baths.
